Talk about the Chicago White Sox

Konerko honored by Clemente nomination

Paul Konerko is not about the individual recognition or personal accolades. Even if he’s hitting .320 with 40 home runs and 100 RBIs in a given season, it’s almost impossible to get the White Sox team captain to talk about his accomplishments. But being named as the White Sox nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, as he was on Tuesday, well, that’s an honor that caused Konerko to stop and take notice.

“It’s kind of cool any time you get nominated for anything outside the lines. You take note of that more,” Konerko said. “It makes you feel a little bit better as a player because a lot between the lines comes and goes, even though the effort is the same.”

The Clemente Award recognizes the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team. It is named in honor of the former Pirates outfielder, whose spirit and goodwill will always be remembered. Clemente died in a plane crash while attempting to transport relief supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua on Dec. 31, 1972.
