If you happened to be visiting the bathroom at the most inopportune time Monday or if you were bent over searching for a contact lens or if for some deeply held yet tragically misguided reason you have sworn off TV sports, let me tell you about Mark Buehrle's fielding play. I'm not sure I'll do it justice. I'm not sure replays do it justice.

This was the fifth inning of the White Sox' 6-0 Opening Day victory over Cleveland, and their pitcher was rolling along, smooth as fresh pavement. Indians catcher Lou Marson hit a hard grounder back at Buehrle, who instinctively made like Blackhawks goalie Antti Niemi and kicked at the ball with his left leg. Big save.

The ball caromed toward the first-base line, and Buehrle gave chase. It looked futile, but somebody forgot to tell the Sox ace this. When he arrived at the intersection of Forget It and Dude, You Have No Chance, Buehrle scooped up the ball with his glove and, without looking, flipped it in one motion between his legs to first baseman Paul Konerko, who caught it barehanded.

The Kansas City Royals announced Friday they traded utility player Mark Teahen to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for infielders Chris Getz and Josh Fields.
Additionally, the White Sox received cash considerations from the Royals.

Teahen, 28, who has spent his entire five-year career with the Royals, has played every position other than pitcher and catcher. In 2009, he batted. 271 with 12 homers and 50 runs batted in for Kansas City in 144 games.

In 676 career games, Teahen, who was originally dealt to the Royals from Oakland in a three-team deal that sent Carlos Beltran to Houston, has a .269 batting average, 59 homers and 293 RBI. It's possible that Teahen could play right field next year for Chicago, as the White Sox bought out Jermaine Dye's contract Friday.

Teahen is eligible for arbitration this offseason.

The White Sox packed their bags for the final time this season, shook hands and hugged following a 5-3 loss to the Tigers to end a 79-83 season.
Jermaine Dye faces an uncertain future, with the Sox likely to give him a $1 million buyout instead of both sides agreeing to a $12 million mutual option for 2010. He struggled miserably in the second half, hitting .181 with seven homers in 210 at-bats after hitting .302 with 20 long balls in 291 at-bats before the break.

"I don't really have a feeling right now," Dye said calmly after finishing with a .250 batting average, 27 home runs and 81 RBIs. "I just want to go home, get away from baseball like I always do and take two weeks off and re-evaluate the situation and get into my program."

CLEVELAND - White Sox second baseman Chris Getz already was saying his goodbyes before he found out the game Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians had been postponed because of rain. The game was called more than two hours before it was scheduled to begin. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today starting at 3:05 p.m., though rain is in the forecast.

Leaving the team to have surgery Thursday in Philadelphia was not the way Getz wanted his season to end. The lower oblique strain that put Getz on the disabled list Aug. 21 still is bothering him, and a specialist discovered it was a sports hernia. The original plan was to address it at the end of the season, but that went out the window with the Sox's playoff chances.

''That's why we're getting it done now,'' Getz said. ''It's not like a serious surgery. It's still surgery, but I think the recovery time will take about six weeks before you can start being fully active again. That's why it's better to get it done now so I can fully prepare for the start of the 2010 season.''

That also closed the book on a 2009 campaign during which Getz showed signs of being a stable force at second base for years to come.

Getz hit .261 with 49 runs and stole 25 bases in 27 attempts for an American League-best 92.6 percent success rate. He was limited to 107 games because of the injury.

''We knew that this probably had to be taken care of,'' Getz said. ''It was just a matter of whether or not it was going to be rest or surgery, so obviously the rest was ruled out.''

During Detroit's three-game stay at U.S. Cellular Field this weekend, the White Sox figure to be mathematically eliminated from the American League Central title race. That harsh reality won't prevent the White Sox from playing as if the season just started or as if a playoff berth is on the line with every pitch. At least, the 2009 finality better not change the team's attitude, according to general manager Ken Williams.

"They better not quit. I don't want to see any quit," said Williams, during his 28-minute meeting with the media prior to Wednesday's 8-6 loss to the Twins. "I won't have people around me that quit, whether it be anybody in uniform or anyone in the front office, anyone around the organization that I hear even talking about it. I can't be around people that quit.

During Detroit’s three-game stay at U.S. Cellular Field this weekend, the White Sox figure to be mathematically eliminated from the American League Central title race.

That harsh reality won’t prevent the White Sox from playing as if the season just started or as if a playoff berth is on the line with every pitch. At least, the 2009 finality better not change the team’s attitude, according to general manager Ken Williams.

“They better not quit. I don’t want to see any quit,” said Williams, during his 28-minute meeting with the media prior to Wednesday’s 8-6 loss to the Twins. “I won’t have people around me that quit, whether it be anybody in uniform or anyone in the front office, anyone around the organization that I hear even talking about it. I can’t be around people that quit.

John Danks knows he's getting close to reaching his target number.
Just how close the White Sox left-hander actually winds up getting to his personal goal of 200 innings pitched this season, however, is solely up to him. But Danks, in his third big league year, certainly is going to give it his best shot.

"Oh yeah," Danks said. "That's been a goal of mine since I've got to this level. I came within five innings last year. It's just one of those things. It's kind of a [high] watermark for a pitcher, and I'm going to try to do my best to get here."

A.J. Pierzynski caught all nine innings of the White Sox 6-3 victory over the Mariners on Tuesday night at Safeco Field. Pierzynski actually delivered the game-winning, two-run single in the top of the seventh of that particular contest.
And the veteran catcher was back in the starting lineup for Wednesday night's contest, once again staying the entire evening in the Pacific Northwest. Working consecutive night games does not stand as especially unusual for an accomplished catcher, even at this latter stage of the 162-game season when the bumps and bruises start to add up.

Playing almost every day has been the norm for Pierzynski, though, since he joined the White Sox. Wednesday night's contest marked the fifth straight season Pierzynski has reached 1,000 innings caught, setting a franchise record in that category. Pierzynski actually has a streak of eight straight such seasons, factoring in his time in Minnesota and the one season spent in San Francisco.

Feeling disappointed, struggling around the .500 mark -- and hanging onto hope. The White Sox hardly have been the scourge of the American League this season, but blessed to be in baseball's weakest division they want to believe they are still within striking distance of the Central division-leading Tigers.

And with six of their final nine games against the Tigers, manager Ozzie Guillen believes the White Sox can still compete for the division title if his four veteran hitters heat up down the stretch.

"We got Carlos [Quentin], we have [Alex] Rios, PK [Paul Konerko] and JD [Jermaine Dye], almost in the same way," Guillen said.

"I think if two out of those four guys get hot, I think it's going be interesting. Because if we play the way we play right now with those guys hot, that means we can do some damage."

If it seems like only yesterday that White Sox rookie Daniel Hudson was breaking into professional baseball at its lowest level as a pitching prospect ...

... Well, that's because it's pretty darn close to yesterday.
In the span of just one season, Hudson has made a somewhat absurd leap from the entry-level ranks of pro ball to the apex of the sport. He began in the spring of 2009 with Winston-Salem, the Class A advanced team in the White Sox organization. Now, he finds himself right in the thick of a Major League pennant race, trying to help the White Sox to an American League Central title out of the bullpen.

The White Sox finally ruled that Jake Peavy won't make his debut Thursday at Wrigley Field against the Cubs. The hope is that the right-hander won't be ruled out to pitch for the Sox this week. In his fourth rehab start for Class AAA Charlotte on Saturday, Peavy was shut down after 3 1/3 innings because of tightness in his right elbow, which was stung by a comebacker last Monday.

The goal was to get him close to 100 pitches, but he had to settle for 68. So where does this leave Peavy?
